No commonality to cling to here. Face-pages like these are pretty much my default if I don’t wind up getting really excited about drawing a figure / character right away. I have version of these from when i was probably 7 years old. They look much different. ~ 40 minutes

Yeesh. I like the figure on the right but the left one really got away from me. Ink is unforgiving in that respect. ~ 40 minutes

I really like the face in the center, but the composition sort of fell apart with the character on the right. ~ 35 minutes

I liked Tuesday’s (April 12th) sketch enough to try another in that same style. Didn’t turn out as good but I like the bandages and the ridiculous ‘brain replacement’ attachment on the head. I struggled with this one a bit ~ 100 minutes

That is a rather huge forearm. I like the facial expression and her hair but yeah, that arm is hilarious in hindsight. ~ 45 minutes

HR Giger

michael @ 2:45 pm

As Ridley Scott is (sort of) jumping back into the world of Alien this Spring, I began poking around the Internet for HR Gigers original concept art and practical set pieces for The Derelict and The Space Jockey. These remain some of my favorite images in all of cinema; the mystery wrapped up in the very brief introduction of that long-dead character lingers over the entire series. The age of the cockpit (as implied by it’s long dead occupant), the massive scale of the elephantine pilot, the orderly presence of the Alien egg-pods, all of it is overwhelmingly odd and wonderful.

I like this one – it has the more theatrical presentation and narrative-based feeling that I’m shooting for. ~ 60 minutes

When you see a bunch of gray and faint lines, that means I’ve screwed something up and gone over the bad lines / value with a white pencil, which mutes the blemishes, but doesn’t entirely mask them. For instance her lower arm was in rough shape, so I shortened the forearm, changed the positioning of the hand, ect. This sort of thing could be avoided if I spent more time with the pre-sketch (in gray marker), but sometimes it’s hard to gauge how things are going to turn out until you actually start laying lines down. ~60 minutes

I had a good time drawing with the guys last night (see below) and am trying to do something similar here. ~ 60 minutes
